Adopting From the Douglas Sanctuary for Cats

Our Commitment to our Sanctuary Cats

Every cat we take in becomes part of our family. We love them, care for them and promise to protect them for as long as they need us. Our goal for our cats is to adopt them into their forever homes and with this comes a profound responsibility for ensuring they land in the best possible homes for them.

It is our privilege and duty to advocate for our cats, cats that have in one way or another been let down in their previous lives. So, we don’t push adoption placements to whoever applies. Our commitment to our cats is to find them the right home based on their personality and individual needs, one that can provide them a lifetime of love and care.

Our Commitment to Adopters

Adopting from us is a highly supported and personal adoption experience, one that starts at the point of application and lasts throughout the cat’s lifetime with you. Every cat we place for adoption will have been with us for at least 12 months and so we know them extremely well. Combine that with our knowledge of a cat’s history, background and personality and it means we can take some of the guess work out of adopting a Rescue cat.  Our adoption process is thorough. It’s not always quick. But we will only ever adopt cats to you that are genuinely right for your family and your home.

The Right Match

We take time to get to know our adopters. We will meet with you in person in your home; meet your resident cats if you have them and ask the right questions to help us understand the type of cat you want, your lifestyle, your home and what experience you can offer. It’s a process grounded in the need to protect the long-term future of our cats and to make sure you are matched with the right cat for you.

If we don’t currently have a cat that’s a match for you?  We’ll be honest about that because placing a cat that isn’t right for you has the potential for disaster, and these cats deserve more than that and so do you.

Trust our knowledge

Re-homing a rescue cat is rarely about instant chemistry it’s about seeing the potential in a cat that simply needs a chance to feel secure around you, but we know our cats. Not your visit version, the real version. We know their likes and dislikes, their little routines and personality quirks that make them who they are. We know who blossoms once they trust you, who is playful, who is calm, who will need some time and patience.  We know how they manage life living with cats, dogs and children and we know which cats will be right for you, once trust is established attaching so deeply it will be like you’ve always belonged to them!

Full Rescue Back Up

Every cat we that place in adoption goes with our Full Rescue Back Up for their entire lifetime. In simple terms that means

  • If your circumstances change, we will take the cat back into our care.
  • Post adoption we are always there for you if you need us, a phone call away for any concerns during the settling in period and beyond through all of life’s hiccups.

Veterinary Health and History

All our cats have a thorough health assessment when they come into Sanctuary which includes testing for FIV/FeLV.  All our cats see our vet at a minimum of once a year for their annual health check. Any condition that requires attention (including dental care) is taken care of by us.  In addition:

  • We take our cats for a vet check immediately prior to adoption to make entirely sure they are fit to adopt.
  • Post adoption your vet can request access to the previous medical history of your adopted cat.
  • Post adoption your vet can request access to the previous medical history of your adopted cat.

Resident Cats

All our cats are highly sociable toward other cats, and they will thrive best with feline company.  Which is why we very much welcome enquiries from adopters that have cats already in residence.

Indoor only homes

We don’t take in owner surrenders. All our cats have been strays and have spent a significant amount of time surviving alone outside or living in colonies.  Some cats come in injured; nearly all are in survival mode, so they crave safety and predictability. Indoor homes are the safest and most predictable homes for a cat and would suit many of our cats particularly those whose past experiences have made them timid of outdoor spaces and strangers.  So, we welcome applications for Indoor Only homes and have plenty of experience and advice on meeting the needs of an Indoor Cat and feline enrichment.
